About Me

Dr. Susan FunkI began my graduate work in 1995 and have worked in various parts of the field of psychology and mental health since that time.

Prior to private practice, I worked for over six years at the UNC Charlotte Counseling Center as a psychotherapist. In that position, I also served as the Practicum Coordinator; supervisor and trainer of practicum students and predoctoral psychology interns; and the coordinator of At-Risk gatekeeper training for suicide prevention.

While at UNCC, I led a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Group, twice each academic year. I also co-led an Interpersonal Neurobiology group for four years. Prior to this, I worked for a Federally Qualified Health Center in Philadelphia, PA with adults of all ages experiencing chronic mental health and medical issues.

Additionally, I have worked in multiple other settings to include a community mental health clinic, a rehabilitation center, and psychiatric department of a hospital, doing neuropsychological testing.

I assist clients with many different presenting issues from relationship difficulties to depressive and anxiety disorders. However, I have developed particular interest in working with trauma, adult survivors of childhood abuse, cancer issues, and spiritual concerns. I typically take an integrative approach to my work, which draws heavily on interpersonal, psychodynamic and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy models.

Although I use a number of different models, I tend to integrate mindfulness into most of my therapy, helping individuals to develop aware acceptance of the moment and to meet themselves with the same compassion they would give to others.
